Safari Keyboard Reference

The following is a keyboard reference guide for Safari Version 5.0.5 (6533.21.1). Keyboard commands may change in earlier and later releases. I would like to thank Esther on the Mac visionaries for her suggestions.

General Commands

These commands are listed under the Safari menu.

  • To open the preferences pane press “Command-,” (comma).
  • To block popup windows press “Command-Shift-k”. This is a toggle.
  • To empty the cache press “Command-Option-e”.
  • To hide Safari press “Command-h”.
  • To hide other applications press “Command-Option-h”.
  • To quit Safari Press “Command-q”.

Opening, Closing, Saving, Mailing, and Printing

  • To open a new window press “Command-n”.
  • To open a new tab press “Command-t”.
  • To open a file on disk press “Command-o”.
  • To open an Internet location press “Command-l”
  • To close a window or tab press “Command-w”.
  • To save a webpage on disk press “Command-s”. A standard Save As dialog will open.
  • To mail the contents of a web page press “Command-i”.
  • To mail a link to the current web page press “Command-Shift-i”.
  • To print the current web page press “Command-p”.

Editing and Searching

  • To select all press “Command-a”.
  • To copy a selection to the clipboard press “Command-c”.
  • To cut a selection to the clipboard press “Command-x”. This only works in edit boxes.
  • To paste text from the clipboard press “Command-v”.
  • To paste text and retain it’s formatting press “Command-Shift-Option-v”.
  • To undo what you have typed press “Command-z”.
  • To redo, put text back that you have deleted press “Command-Shift-z”.
  • To autofill a form on a web page press “Command-Shift-a”.
  • To show Spelling and Grammar press “Command-:”.
  • To check the spelling of an edit box press “Command-;”.
  • To perform a google search press “Command-Option-f”.
  • To find text on a web page press “Command-f”.
  • To find the next occurrence of the same text press “Command-g”.
  • To find the previous occurrence of the same text press “Command-Shift-g”.
  • To hide the find banner press “Command-Shift-f”.
  • To use selected text for a find press “Command-e”.
  • To jump to selected text press “Command-j”.
  • To activate the Special Characters dialog press “Command-Option-t”.

Viewing

  • To show or hide the tool bar press “Command-|”
  • To show or hide the Bookmarks Bar press “Command-Shift-b”.
  • To show or hide the Tab Bar press “Command-shift-t”.
  • To show or hide the Status Bar press “Command-/”.
  • To stop the loading of a page press “Command-.”.
  • To reload a page press “Command-r”.
  • To view a page in actual size press “Command-0″.
  • To zoom in the page press “Command-+”.
  • To zoom out the page press “Command–”.
  • To view a page’s source press “Command-Option-u”.
  • To open the reader press “Command-Shift-r”.

History

  • To view Top Sites press “Command-Option-1″.
  • To show All History press “Command-Option-2″.
  • To go back a page press “Command-[".
  • To go forward a page press "Command-]“.
  • To display the home page you have set in your browser preferences press “Command-Shift-h”.
  • To perform a “Search Results Snapback” press “Command-Option-s”.

Bookmarks

  • To activate the first nine bookmarks in the menu bar you can hold down the command key and press numbers 1 through 9.
  • To Show or hide All Bookmarks press “Command-Option-b”.
  • When the Bookmarks Bar is visible you can press “Command-f” to filter bookmarks by search string.
  • To add a Bookmark press “Command-d”.
  • To add a new book mark folder press “Command-Shift-n”.

Development

  • To show the Web Inspector press “Command-Option-i”.
  • To show the Error Console press “Command-Option-c”.
  • To start profiling javascript press “Command-Option-Shift-p”.

Window Commands

  • To minimize a window press “Command-m”.
  • To go to the next tab press “Control-tab”.
  • To go to the previous tab press “Control-shift-tab”
  • To display the Downloads window press “Command-Option-l”.
  • To display the Activity window press “Command-Option-A”.
